Are we giving far too much for cricket ???

India has won the cricket world cup 2011, the entire media and people are going crazy. I have seen few of my friends realized that they were very proud to be an INDIAN now, just because India has won the world cup. I know what the importance of cricket in this country is; I myself was a cricket freak even now. But are we giving it too much from our share?

The back to back corruption charges from the CWG scam, 2G, Adarsh housing society, black money and even the state assembly polls in some of the states all have taken a back foot.

Just when thinking it is it just us who were giving too much? The answer is a big No. Yes, the thus for adamant India in negotiating with Pakistan on the side-lines of bringing the perpetrators of the 26/11 to justice had just been vanished or just that Pakistan has agreed to  India that “A team of Indian officials will be allowed to visit Pakistan and question the suspects of 26/11” and their PM Yousuf Raza Gilani expressed hope that India and Pak will renew ties just after the cricket semi-final match between the two countries.

India had won the cup. The BCCI has announced prize money of 1 crore each for all the players and half the amount for the support staff. This is acceptable as it is the money that was obtained / earned through the game of cricket.

But what is uncalled for is that Delhi govt. announcing 1 crore for each players and 2 crore for the captain Dhoni. The Delhi govt was already under huge burden after the CWG and the supposed scams around it.
Let’s not forget that they are not the cricketers of the olden days or athletes of some other sport. They earn money through Ads, through IPL and through every other means even with the logo on bats. The amount they're going to give them is not even a worthy consideration for them, who at an average can earn at least 3cr for the IPL season that spreads across just less than 20 days. I 'm not being critical or jealous of them. Of course it is neither the Indian govt nor the tax payer’s money. They are getting it from corporate giants. I'm just reiterating that the Delhi govt should not have announced it.

Even these things can even be forgotten or assimilated. But the blunder upon it all is that the Indian govt has exempted tax for the money that ICC had earned through the WC games in India. It was informed by prof. Ratnaker shetty (the chairman of organizing committee for cricket world cup) himself in a television interview that the amount would come close to 45 Crore. I was heartbroken upon hearing it. It is not the first time that India is giving the tax exemption; we have already given the concession for ICC champion’s trophy in 2006 which was held in India. Check the link below for more details on it.

Why is that tax exemption given?
The answer is that, it is one of the 3 conditions that the host country should satisfy for awarding the host status. However I’m not going to buy in the debate that the money obtained from tourists that the competition had attracted is more than the exempted amount.

ICC is wealthy by itself; BCCI is even wealthier (I hope). If at all it was the prerequisite we should not have hosted the world cup or if the BCCI wanted to host it in India than it should have spent it from its pocket.
This is high time that we should think of these things, it would be better if we stay focussed on issues like this and try to spend these amounts to the welfare of the country and its people.
